City Web Site
One of the oldest cities in the Bay Area, Martinez has a long and colorful history. Birthplace of the martini, first served in 1874 to a thirsty gold miner, and of legendary baseball slugger Joe DiMaggio, Martinez was also home to John Muir; his country estate is now a National Historic Site.
Nestled at the gateway to the Delta, the Marina draws boaters, joggers and bicyclists to its shores while theater and music lovers enjoy a beautiful blend of culture and scenery in our 1,100-seat amphitheater overlooking the water. Celebrating over 150 years as the county seat of Contra Costa County, Martinez embraces its historic, tree-lined downtown where family-owned businesses still know their customers by name.
Rich with history, Martinez is also building for the future, as evidenced by a new, award-winning AMTRAK Station on the north end of downtown. Future projects include restoration of the historic train depot and arrival of a downtown cabaret theater.
