| In 2008: The new Astana Cycling Team is in its first year under the leadership of Johan Bruyneel, the eight-time winning Sports Director of the Tour de France. Sponsored by a conglomerate of companies hailing from Astana, the capital of cycling enthused Kazakhstan, the Team is a member of the highest level of competition in cycling, the UCI ProTour. The Astana Team is making its debut at the Amgen Tour of California, and will bring experienced riders who have found success in "The Golden State", including the 2007 Amgen Tour of California winner and current USA Cycling National Road Race Champion, Levi Leipheimer. While riding last year for the Discovery Channel Team, Leipheimer put an exclamation point on his season with a third place overall finish at the Tour de France, riding in support of his current teammate and 2007 Champion Alberto Contador. Leipheimer is one of two Americans riding for Team Astana. He is joined by Chris Horner, who was third in last year’s stage into San Jose. The two Americans are also supported by Jani Brajkovic, who has found success in the US, winning the overall and best young rider classifications at the 2007 Tour de Georgia. After coming off their January training camp in New Mexico, the Team is motivated and prepared to help Leipheimer defend his Amgen Tour of California crown. |
