"Considered one of the world's most promising cyclists, "Popo" turned pro in 2002 after scoring an impressive 35 wins in 2000 and 2001, including the men's U23 World Road Race Championship. After finishing third in the 2003 Giro, he was often touted as a strong candidate for team leadership at his former Discovery Channel team. While leading Discovery at the 2007 Giro, Popovych crashed out on the 12 stage. He served as a support rider in Discovery's 2007 Tour de France, finishing eighth overall. In 2009 he joins Astana after riding as a domestique for Cadel Evan on Silence-Lotto."
