At the southern end of California’s Central Valley is Bakersfield, California’s 9th largest city, now larger than either New Orleans or Pittsburgh.  Bakersfield is strategically located in the heart of one of the world’s largest economies, a place with cutting edge technology development is blended with a rich history of agriculture and oil production.

Steeped in music history, the city is the birthplace of the country music genre known worldwide as the Bakersfield Sound.  The city boasts a burgeoning arts district, unique museums, live theaters, and renowned Basque dining, with more Basque restaurants than any other city in the nation.  In 2011, one of them was awarded the prestigious James Beard Foundation’s American Classics Award, which is bestowed annually upon only a select group of restaurants.

As Bakersfield grows, so does its commitment to cycling.  More than 100 miles of bike paths and lanes traverse the wide range of topography of Bakersfield.  In addition, the Kern River Parkway includes more than 6,000 acres of trails, parks, waterway, and a 30-mile bike path.  Located within four hours’ drive of 90 percent of California’s population, Bakersfield is centrally located to allow fans from throughout California to witness this year’s exciting time trial.  A short drive from the city is the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, where top-rated whitewater rafting, fly-fishing, and hiking guarantee Bakersfield visitors will always find More to Explore.

"In 2012, the Amgen Tour of California returns to Bakersfield.  Last time it was for a spectacular Stage Five finish in 2010.  This time it is for the time trial.  I am delighted to welcome the Tour of California back to Bakersfield, where there is always More to Explore."
— Harvey L. Hall, Mayor of Bakersfield
