Canadian Dominique Rollin won the 4th and longest stage of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California on Thursday, a 135.3-mile leg from Seaside to San Luis Obispo.

The Toyota-United rider attacked his breakaway companions of many hours to hike off on his own in the final 15 miles.

He held off a chase by Spaniard Iker Camano Ortuzar of Saunier Duval-Scott and the popular American George Hincapie of High Road in the final miles.

Hincapie took second place about 19 seconds behind and the pack finished less than 3 minutes behind after more than 7 hours in the saddle, mostly in the rain.

Race leader Levi Leipheimer’s Astana team controlled the day as the early breakaway slowly fell apart to attrition, and then disintegrated after Rollin's attack.

Rollin, the 2006 Canadian road champion, started the day almost 25 minutes out of the overall lead, and was no threat to Leipheimer's lead.

Throughout the day riders in the break and in the peloton fell victim to the distance, the cold rain and a ugly stomach bug that has been making its rounds of the field and the support crews.

BMC's Jackson Stewart who was snagging mountain points from his breakaway companions early in the day, later fell off the breakaway, then quit the race and was being treated by race doctors for hypothermia.
