Route Information: May 13, 2015 - Stage 4 Start
Pismo Beach is a Classic California beach town ideally situated on California's Central Coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Located in southern San Luis Obispo County, just off scenic Pacific Coast Highway and Highway 101, Pismo Beach is easy to get to, yet not so easy to leave.
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Pacific from numerous oceanfront lodging properties and cliff-top restaurants offering the freshest seafood and oak-pit barbeque steaks or take a walk on the 1,200-foot historic Pismo Beach Pier and promenade. Pamper yourself in a luxurious, beachfront hotel, enjoy the comforts of home in a family-friendly vacation rental or become one with nature by staying in our award-winning RV Parks and State Park campgrounds.
We have places you’ll love to ride. The Bob Jones City to Sea Bike Trail trailhead is just a half-mile north of Pismo Beach. The trail is a well-paved, county-maintained bike trail, great for all levels of hiking and biking. It makes for an enjoyable, smooth (and mostly) flat ride with trail benches sprinkled throughout.
You can also rent ATVs and dune buggies to explore miles of rolling sand dunes on California's only drive-on beach or go horseback riding along the water's edge. Take a lesson in surfing, boogie boarding or stand up paddle boarding by the famous Pismo Beach Pier. From biking and kayaking, to surfing and golfing, Pismo Beach offers an array of outdoor activities to fit any vacation style, any time of year.
During the winter months, thousands of Monarch butterflies migrate to the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove, the world's most popular grove hosting more than 35,000 butterflies last season. Other wildlife includes dolphins, sea otters, California brown pelicans, migrating whales, and the Peregrine falcons. Although now greatly diminished, the Pismo clams were once so abundant they were harvested with plows on the beach, putting Pismo Beach on the map as the "Clam Capital of the World."
Discover Pismo Beach's unrivaled proximity to wine country, with tasting rooms in downtown Pismo Beach and nearly 30 wineries within ten miles of the water's edge, it's the perfect pairing of Wine & Waves. The Edna Valley wine trail is both easy to get to and easy to follow. Just shake the sand from your hair, grab a wine trail map and a camera, and hit the road. Tour, taste, and savor the scenery. When you head back to the beach, be sure to bring a bottle of your favorite find to enjoy as you watch the sunset and settle in for another dreamy Classic California evening in Pismo Beach, your one stop Wine & Waves™ destination. Cheers to you visiting us soon!
"The Pismo Beach City Council, residents and businesses are very excited to once again host the Amgen Tour of California. We are pleased to showcase our beautiful city and coastline and extend our "Classic California" hospitality." — Mayor, Shelly Higginbotham, Pismo Beach, CA
