Irvine, California resident Roger Realsen didn’t believe it was…well…real when he received an email and Facebook messages notifying him that he won the 2014 Amgen Tour of California Trek Sweepstakes.

“I actually thought it was some sort of spam. Once I actually spoke to a race executive, it began to feel real and I was super excited,” said the surprised 44-year-old IT consultant who started riding a year and a half ago to keep up with his wife who does triathlons with a local tri club.

Realsen had been riding a nearly 10-year-old bike until he won the Trek Madone 4.3. He just had a professional fitting to get it dialed in for his maiden voyage. Realsen plans to ride his beautiful new steed up to four times per week as he trains for the IRONMAN 70.3 Silverman taking place in October in Henderson, Nevada. To get ready for that distance, he will do the swim leg in a triathlon relay this weekend and race his new Trek for the first time next month in a sprint distance tri.

It turns out that Realsen has owned a Trek in the past. “I remember my very first road bike ever was a Trek 750 or 950 and I think it was yellow. I was in junior high at the time and I was trying to be like my big brother, Russ, who was doing some road riding for fitness. So mom and dad got me my very own road bike. I distinctly remember freaking out at how skinny the tires were compared to my past childhood bikes.”

Realsen watched a few stages of the Amgen Tour of California on television last May and the opening weekend of the Tour de France before setting off on a business trip this week. “I enjoyed the first two stages over the weekend immensely! Being out of town for this week is making it hard to get my viewing time in however.”

When asked who he’s rooting for at the Tour, understandably Realsen revealed a bias for Trek Factory Racing. “I definitely enjoyed hearing about Jens (Voigt) and seeing his accomplishment on stage 1. Also, the Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma Quick-Step) crash and story was fun to watch. Devastating for Mark but WOW! So at this point, since I won a Trek bike, I should pull for one of their riders: Mathew Busche.”
