Many riders described Stage 7 as the true Queen Stage of the race with the only true summit finish coming early in the week on Stage 3. The course traveled across the narrow, twisty, and undulating roads of Sonoma County just west of Santa Rosa – throughout the day there wasn’t a moment of rest or time to lose concentration. With the general classification standings very close on this tough day, the racing was aggressive and we saw an early selection of 50 riders form as riders fell victim to the regions’ short steep climbs.

At the end of the day, many teams described the route as being similar to a Spring Classic and we saw none other than the Tour of Flanders and World Champion Peter Sagan solo off the front with 40 miles to go after dropping his breakaway companions. A true measure of the difficulty of the day could be measured in the rider’s estimated calorie output, which is calculated by heart rate on the Microsoft Band. The average calorie expenditure for Daniel Patten (Team WIGGINS), David Lozano (Team Novo Nordisk), Daniel Eaton (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling), and Jesse Anthony (Rally Cycling) was 4,627 calories over the course of a 5-hour ride.

The longest night of sleep during the Amgen Tour of California was recorded by UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider Tanner Putt before Stage 7. Although the band only counts 6 hours 42 minutes of actual sleep, Putt’s time laying down was actually 10 hours 18 minutes – this is key since people normally count “sleep” as the time they lay down until the time they get out of bed. Most importantly after 6 days of racing, Putt recorded long periods of “Restful Sleep” (deep sleep), which is the time for the body to recover most rapidly.
