Prior to competing in today’s Stage 2 time trail in Folsom during the Amgen Tour of California, every rider’s bike was carefully checked to make sure that it was legal according to UCI rules. When each rider arrived at the start house a few minutes ahead of their start time, they were greeted by UCI officials. The first official put the bike in the measuring jig pictured above to make sure the geometry and the measurement of the saddle and bars adhered to the rules. Then the bike was passed to a second official who weighed it to make sure that the bike was at least 6.8 kilos (about 15 pounds). Since time trial bikes and disc wheels tend to be heavier than standard road bikes, every bike easily met the minimum weight requirements.
