for 2011 Amgen Tour of California
LOS ANGELES (December 8, 2010) - Following the much-anticipated announcement of the Host Cities for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race, Cyclingnews.com has been named as an official media partner for the sixth-annual race by race presenter AEG.
Cyclingnews.com will have a dedicated Amgen Tour of California section where race fans can explore exclusive and in-depth previews on the 2011 race route; interviews with cyclists and race partners; and announcements before and during the race. Additionally, Cyclingnews.com’s partner publications, BikeRadar.com and Procycling magazine, will feature exclusive race-related content.
“We’re excited for the opportunity to work with AEG as an official media partner for the Amgen Tour of California and feel that it’s a natural fit,” said Steve Medcroft, Associate Publisher of Cyclingnews. “The Amgen Tour of California is one of the best races in the world for cycling fans, and Cyclingnews and BikeRadar provide the largest online audience for cycling in the world. We plan to bring readers deeper into the race and hope to support AEG and its partners in their mission to showcase California as an incredible backdrop for world-class cycling.”
The 2011 Amgen Tour of California will travel throughout the state from May 15-22, 2011. The eight-day race will wind through some of California’s most scenic landmarks, visiting returning cities like Sacramento and Paso Robles and new cities like Lake Tahoe and Mt. Baldy.
“Cyclingnews.com has long been a dependable source of information for the professional cycling world,” said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports. “As the largest cycling race in America, we are confident that with Cyclingnews.com, BikeRadar.com and Procycling magazine as premier destinations for news and information for the 2011 race, we will provide fans of the Amgen Tour of California with comprehensive resources for all things race-related.”
Along with a dedicated page on the Cyclingnews website, Future Publishing, owners of Cyclingnews, also will publish the official race guide that will be available during the 2011 race.
“We’re pleased to publish the official Amgen Tour of California race guide,” continued Medcroft. “Not only do we produce some of the best cycling magazines and websites, but for years we’ve been the publishing partner for some of the world’s largest companies. We plan to make the 2011 Amgen Tour of California guide an invaluable resource to fans of the race and a great platform for marketers looking to align themselves with the race at a critical point in the cycling season.”
In addition to coverage of the cycling aspects of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, Cyclingnews also will provide extensive coverage of the charitable initiatives of the race, including title sponsor Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer ® initiative, which seeks to empower those impacted by the disease. Throughout the race, cancer survivors in various cities are featured and given support by riders and local dignitaries.
Since its inaugural year in 2006, the Amgen Tour of Californiahas grown to become one of the largest and most important professional cycling events in the world, earning its place alongside such races as the Tour de France. The race’s shift beginning in 2010 from February to May on the cycling calendar has allowed for more challenging courses, including last year’s visit to Big Bear Lake. Similarly, this year’s race will include its first-ever mountaintop finish at Mt. Baldy during Stage 7 of the race.
Returning as the title sponsor for the sixth consecutive year, Amgen will continue to leverage the race to raise awareness and support for people affected by cancer through its Breakaway from Cancer® initiative. A leading global biotechnology company with headquarters in Thousand Oaks, Calif., one of the 2011 race Host Cities, Amgen's invaluable support has helped to ensure the continued success of the race and impact beyond the sporting arena.
