LOS ANGELES (May 12, 2014) – For the second time in Amgen Tour of California history, bicycling fans and enthusiasts of all ages and levels will have the opportunity to participate in the race experience by riding on the actual race course leading up to the Stage 7 finish of the more than 720-mile, Tour de France-style competition.
On Sat., May 17, the elite professional cyclists in the internationally acclaimed Amgen Tour of California will race from Santa Clarita to Pasadena. That morning from 11 a.m.– 1:30 p.m., the Kaiser Permanente Ride, Roll and Stroll in downtown Pasadena will allow cyclists and fans of all abilities to ride, skate or walk the 2.7-mile, closed-circuit course along the famous Colorado Boulevard where the professionals will finish their race day just hours later.
Free to participants of all ages and experience levels, the Kaiser Permanente Ride, Roll and Stroll begins and ends at Pasadena City Hall. Along the 2.7-mile course, riders will get to experience the cheers of onlookers as thousands of residents and fans begin to line the streets in anticipation of the best professional riders in the world blazing by to complete Stage 7 of the Amgen Tour of California.
After departing from Santa Clarita and crossing over the San Gabriel Mountains, the professional riders will pass through the finish line on the first of three laps in downtown Pasadena around 3 p.m. with an expected finish to the 89-mile stage at 3:30 p.m.
“One the biggest requests our fans make year after year is the opportunity to ride on the Amgen Tour of California course like the pros. This year in Pasadena, they’ll get to do just that,” said Kristin Bachochin, executive director, Amgen Tour of California and senior vice president, AEG Sports. “If you enjoy riding a bike, you won’t want to miss the Kaiser Permanente Ride, Roll and Stroll.”
Fans interested in taking part in the Kaiser Permanente Ride, Roll and Stroll must register prior to the event on the Amgen Tour of California website.
“We are excited to offer this great opportunity to get some exercise on the historic streets of Pasadena with no traffic!,” said Andy Gallardo, director of fitness for Kaiser Permanente Southern California. “It's a great opportunity to bring the entire family and be active in a safe environment.”
21st Century Fox, sponsor of two-time defending Tour de France champions, Team Sky, is also a proud supporter of this event.
“Team Sky’s mission is not only to inspire people to love the sport of cycling, but to get them on their bikes and participating in the sport,” said Julie Henderson, EVP and chief communications officer, 21st Century Fox. “We cannot think of a better way to live that mission than to open the Amgen Tour of California stage in Pasadena and give fans the unique experience of riding on the same course that our pros will race through later that day.”
Before and following the Kaiser Permanente Ride, Roll and Stroll, fans can enjoy the free Amgen Tour of California Lifestyle Festival, the focal gathering point at the end of each stage. From 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. near the finish line on North Marengo Avenue between Union and Ramona Streets will be a giant, festive atmosphere for pre- and post-race entertainment. The festival will feature big-screen race viewing, health awareness education, cycling gear, family activities, food, entertainment and more. For the littlest cycling fans among us, the Pasadena festival is one of four that will feature Strider Toddler Racing, where tots over 18 months have the opportunity to get an early introduction to cycling “competition” on a Strider balance bike. More details will be available at the Strider booth.
On Sunday May 18, the 2014 Amgen Tour of California will conclude in Thousand Oaks, where a winner will be celebrated in a special awards ceremony. There are plenty of ways to take in the pro action, whether in person on the race course May 11 – 18, via dailybroadcasts on NBC Sports Network and NBC Sports (final Sunday), or by downloading the free Tour Tracker app, which features live race updates, rider background and full race results.
